South Korea and the United States have collaboratively developed a next-generation space telescope called SPHEREx, which will be launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on November 28th (KST). The telescope is designed to observe the sky in 102 different colors, aiming to create the world's first infrared 3D map of the universe. It will gather information on around one billion celestial bodies and help locate water and carbon dioxide distributions within our galaxy, potentially identifying environments that can support life. The mission also hopes to uncover clues about the universe's rapid expansion post-Big Bang by studying the distribution of galaxies. The $280 million project involves multiple institutions including the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), NASA, and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). Korean participation began in 2016, recognizing their advances in near-infrared space telescope technology. The project highlights important international cooperation in the field of space technology.
