The Korean National Heritage Administration has released a detailed research report on the royal tomb visits, known as 'neunghaeng,' conducted by the kings of the Joseon Dynasty. This report provides insights into the rituals and purposes behind these journeys made by the monarchs to pay respects at the tombs of their predecessors. The ability to travel outside the capital was rare for Joseon kings, making these tomb visits significant. During these journeys, the kings would engage in various public activities such as military drills or conversing with locals about their agricultural conditions. Unique to Joseon, unlike Chinese counterparts, these excursions were the few opportunities for kings to leave the capital. The report also examines the regional and chronological patterns of the visits. The research findings are expected to aid in the development of cultural programs related to the royal tombs.
