In South Korea, the profession of tattooing exists in a unique legal gray area where it's recognized as a legitimate business by administrative authorities but considered illegal by the judiciary unless performed by a medical professional. Recently, there has been a push for the legalization of tattooing, as the tattoo artist profession involves over 300,000 workers and is part of a daily routine for about 30% of Koreans.
'Tattooist DOY,' also known as Kim Do-yoon, is at the forefront of this movement. He is head of the first tattoo labor union and advocates for the Tattooing Act, which aims to protect consumers and the stability of tattoo artists’ jobs. Kim integrates his Christian faith into his art, refusing to create tattoos that are lewd, hateful, or anti-religious. Despite facing criticism from religious groups, Kim believes his work is inspired by the Holy Spirit and continues his practice with conviction.
Kim's union also supports tattoo artists who face extortion and legal challenges due to the current law. The union pioneered using 'sterilization' standards in tattooing, ensuring the highest health standards worldwide.
Further, Kim's work includes creating tattoos for industrial accident victims and breast cancer survivors, offering them hope through his skill.
