The Agricultural Technology Center in Cheongju, South Korea, has begun harvesting a new sweet potato variety called 'Tongchae-ru'. Developed by the Rural Development Administration in 2020, this type of sweet potato is notable for its edible leaves and stems, offering versatility similar to Perilla leaves. Tongchae-ru leaves are rich in functional compounds like vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and antioxidants, reportedly containing up to 21 times more antioxidant compounds than regular sweet potatoes. The center has distributed 8500 virus-free seedlings to local farmers and plans to expand distribution next year with additional sweet potato varieties.
