The musical 'The Last Empress', which portrays the life of Empress Myeongseong—wife of King Gojong during the Joseon Dynasty—returns for its 30th anniversary. Known for its blend of traditional Korean instruments like the "buk" (a type of drum), "kkwaenggwari" (small gong), "jing" (large gong), and "janggu" (hourglass drum) with a Western orchestra, the show dramatizes Korea's struggle against foreign powers, especially Japan, which culminated in the tragic event of the Eulmi Incident (the assassination of the Empress in 1895). Celebrating a milestone of over 2 million viewers since its debut in 1995, the musical includes new compositions and emphasizes traditional Korean aesthetics in its set and costume design.
