A traditional Korean court dance called 'Chunaengmu', originally performed solo on a flower-patterned mat, has been reimagined into a dynamic group performance by 24 dancers, known as 'Ilmu'. Created by Prince Hyomyeong during the Joseon Dynasty to celebrate his mother's birthday, this dance has been revived with vibrant choreography while maintaining its essence of restraint. Recently showcased to the media at the Sejong Center in Seoul, 'Ilmu' is a modern reinterpretation of ritual dance from the 'Jongmyo Jeryeak' (royal ancestral rites), a UNESCO intangible heritage. This performance, praised for its striking visuals, sold out all shows at New York's Lincoln Center. Incorporating elements like orange costumes and oversized headdresses, 'Ilmu' emphasizes impactful imagery and the 'beauty of empty space', a key concept in Korean aesthetics.
