The article explores the life and work of Austrian painter Richard Gerstl, known for his intense self-portraits that evoke both confidence and anxiety. Gerstl was a talented artist who, at an early age, attended an academy but later left due to its conservative style. He pursued his own path, studying various disciplines and critiquing the decorative style of the Viennese Secession artists, such as Gustav Klimt. Despite his talent, Gerstl's refusal to compromise and his turbulent personal life, including a scandalous affair, led to his tragic suicide at the young age of 25. Although initially forgotten, his work was rediscovered in the 1950s and has influenced notable artists since then. His pieces are now exhibited in South Korea, providing an opportunity for new audiences to engage with his legacy.
