The National Theater of Korea and Jeonju International Sori Festival have collaborated to produce a new version of 'Simcheong', a story deeply rooted in traditional Korean culture. This performance, directed by Yona Kim, explores the characters’ vulnerabilities rather than just focusing on the filial piety that the original 'Simcheongga', a traditional Korean pansori (a form of musical storytelling), emphasizes. The production aims to provide fresh narratives and character interpretations by shedding light on personal shortcomings and blindness, both literal and figurative. Instead of glorifying Simcheong’s sacrifice, the play delves into the psychological and emotional depths of each character, illustrating a modern and nuanced take on the story. The performances are scheduled to debut in Jeonju before moving to the National Theater in September.
