Reinterpreting 'Simcheong' by National Changgeuk Company

The National Changgeuk Company of Korea is presenting a new performance of 'Simcheong', reinterpreted by director Yona Kim. This production, defined as 'Pansori Theatre', explores the theme of blindness not only in a biological sense but also metaphorically, as seen in characters like Simcheong, Simbongsa, and Paengdeok Eomeom. The play offers a modern take on the traditional Pansori tale, challenging the classic themes of filial piety and exploring the underlying human weaknesses. The production features unique interpretations of characters, questioning why Simcheong had to die and examining the pressures faced by women portrayed in the original story. It includes major sections of the traditional Pansori but innovates by altering character personalities and themes. Director Yona Kim collaborates with European opera influences, promising a fresh perspective on this Korean classic.
