Climate-Resilient New Varieties: Goldenball Apples and Greensis Pears

In response to climate change, the Rural Development Administration (RDA) in South Korea has developed new apple and pear varieties that are gaining popularity. Traditionally, apples are associated with a red color, which occurs when temperatures are below 20°C. However, climate change is impacting apple coloration, leading to lighter hues in popular red varieties like Fuji and Hongro. To address this, the RDA introduced 'Goldenball,' a yellow apple that requires no further coloring work and boasts a high sweetness level of 14.8 Brix. It is primarily cultivated around Daegu Guni.
For pears, the RDA has introduced 'Greensis,' a unique hybrid of Eastern and Western pears that is resistant to black spot disease, a significant threat to the pear industry. Greensis is characterized by its distinct color and texture and is being spread in regions such as Ulsan and Iksan. These efforts underline the importance of developing climate-resilient crops to stabilize supply and demand in horticulture.
