In South Korea, watermelon is a popular summer fruit due to its high water content and rejuvenating nutrients like vitamin C, beta-carotene, and lycopene. However, improper storage can lead to bacterial growth, increasing the risk of food poisoning. A recent study by the Korea Consumer Agency found a striking increase in bacteria on the cut surfaces of refrigerated watermelon wrapped in plastic film. The study highlights dangers like storing watermelon in streams during vacations, as these can be contaminated with harmful microorganisms. Recommendations include keeping cut watermelon in airtight containers, using dedicated cleaning solutions before consumption, and maintaining proper refrigeration to prevent cross-contamination.
