Record High Kimchi Imports Due to Soaring Prices and Heatwave

In the first half of this year, South Korea's kimchi imports reached a record high of $93.79 million, an 11.2% increase from last year. This rise is largely due to soaring vegetable costs caused by abnormal weather, such as heatwaves and late monsoons, pushing demand for cheaper Chinese kimchi, especially in restaurants. As domestic prices for cabbage, radish, and other key ingredients continue to climb, the reliance on imported Chinese kimchi is expected to grow further. Despite growing imports, kimchi exports have declined by 0.7%, widening the trade deficit significantly. The government is implementing measures to stabilize cabbage supply amidst persistent climate challenges, including releasing reserve stock and preparing seedlings for emergencies.
