A Roman-era mosaic, depicting a pair of lovers, has been returned to Italy nearly 80 years after it was stolen by a Nazi officer during World War II from the archaeological site of Pompeii. The artwork, believed to have decorated a bedroom floor, was taken to Germany as a gift to a German citizen who later passed it on to their family. The family contacted Italy's cultural heritage protection unit to return the piece, and it was confirmed as originating from Pompeii. This restoration returns a piece of history back to its rightful place near Mount Vesuvius.
