Gumi City, located in Gyeongbuk, has become the first local government to conquer the highest peaks on all seven continents. The 'Gumi City Seven Summit Expedition Team' successfully completed their challenging journey on December 24th by reaching the summit of Vinson Massif, the highest peak in Antarctica. The team comprised leader Jang Heon-mu and members Kim Cheol-young and Baek Jong-deuk. They started their expedition to Antarctica on December 13th, reached the base camp on the 18th, began their climb on the 20th, and summited on the 24th. The team safely returned to Korea by January 9th. This project began in 2012 when they reached Mount Elbrus in Europe and includes overcoming an earthquake and avalanche on Everest in 2015. This achievement marks Gumi City's initiative as the first local government-led complete conquest of the Seven Summits and also highlights leader Jang’s personal completion of this global mountaineering feat.
