The European Union (EU) has warned of potential flight delays this summer due to a combination of factors including wildfires from heatwaves, strikes, a surge in travel demand, and a shortage of air traffic control staff. Last summer saw the worst delays and cancellations, and similar conditions are expected this year as air travel demand hits record highs without adequate resources to cope. Eurocontrol, responsible for European air traffic management, noted a rise in flight traffic and anticipated severe delays in nine countries due to limited control capabilities. Recent strikes in France and climate-related disruptions like wildfires are exacerbating issues, highlighting a need for expedited implementation of the 'Single European Sky' initiative to streamline air traffic across fragmented airspaces. However, the EU's efforts to solve these challenges remain slow, frustrating airlines and travelers alike, making summer travel particularly challenging in Europe.
