Improvements Required for South Korean Tourism Economics

In an interview with E-Daily, Lee Kyung-soo, Chairman of the Korea Tourism Association, emphasized the need to shift South Korea's tourism policies toward creating new demand instead of concentrating resources in already popular tourist areas like Seoul. Lee suggests that regional tourism is hindered by inadequate infrastructure and advocates for preemptive investment in areas with potential rather than current demand. Lee also highlighted that tourism, referred to as a 'smokeless industry' vital for Korea’s economic future, lacks the necessary recognition and structural support. Addressing these issues could drive local tourism industries and support national economic growth. The redefinition of perception towards tourism and the establishment of a centralized governance structure for guiding tourism policies are recommended.
