The play 'Shakespeare in Love' opened on October 5th at the CJ Towol Theater in the Seoul Arts Center. This imaginative piece suggests that the story of 'Romeo and Juliet' was inspired by Shakespeare's own romantic experiences. Originally a movie that won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1998, it debuted in London’s West End in 2014 and has been positively received in the USA, Canada, Japan, and other parts of the world. In South Korea, it was introduced in 2023 and has returned this season with enhanced direction. The play illustrates Shakespeare, during a creative slump, falling in love with Viola, a noblewoman secretly aspiring to be an actress. This affair leads to the writing of his masterpiece 'Romeo and Juliet.' Skillfully blending fiction and historical facts, the script appeals not only to theater enthusiasts but also to Shakespeare fans. Korean actors such as Lee Kyoo-hyung, Son Woo-hyun, and Lee Sang-yi bring the character 'Will Shakespeare' to life, while Lee Joo-young, Park Joo-hyun, and Kim Hyang-gi portray 'Viola De Lesseps.' Supporting them are talented actors like Song Young-kyu and Lim Chul-hyung, adding depth and emotion. The 2023 Korean debut received praise for its stage design and direction, which have become even more refined this season. with live music from actor-musicians, a 22-member ensemble, and the meticulously recreated 16th-century London set and costumes immerse the audience fully. Scenes from Shakespeare’s other famous works like 'Macbeth' and 'The Merchant of Venice' are incorporated, adding layers to the viewing experience. Historical figures like Kit Marlowe also feature, enhancing the play’s authenticity.
