Does Eating Cheese Before Bed Cause Nightmares? Scientific Insights

A study led by Canada's Montreal University gathered survey data from 1082 psychology students to investigate the impact of food on sleep and dreams. It found that certain foods, particularly dairy products like cheese, might affect sleep quality and potentially lead to vivid dreams or nightmares, especially for individuals with lactose intolerance. The research relied on self-reported information, so it is not definitive, but it suggests a link between pre-bedtime eating habits and dreaming patterns. In support, Dr. Charlotte Gupta from Central Queensland University explains that eating cheese before bedtime can challenge the body's natural digestion processes during sleep, possibly affecting sleep quality and leading to increased dream recollection including nightmares. Despite these findings, consuming cheese or milk with enough time before bed may not disturb sleep. It's recommended to avoid food intake at least two hours before sleeping for optimal sleep quality.
