Recently, consumers in Korea have expressed dissatisfaction as popular franchise cafes like Starbucks and Twosome Place have released new cakes priced higher than average lunch costs. While the average lunch price for office workers is around 9,500 won, cakes can exceed 12,900 won. This price hike has led consumers to point out that a cake slice now costs more than traditional meals such as 순댓국 (sundae soup) or 콩나물국밥 (bean sprout soup). In the summer, Starbucks launched a 'Black Sapphire Cheesecake' priced at 12,900 won. The company defends their pricing arguing that the mini cakes reflect new consumer trends favoring smaller personal celebrations. Despite this, criticism continues online regarding both the pricing and extravagant packaging. The price increases come amidst a general trend of rising costs at franchise cafes. Both Starbucks and Twosome Place have recently raised prices on numerous products, triggering debates about value and affordability as consumers feel the strain of increased living costs.
