Sardine Prices Soar in South Korea Due to Climate Change

The prices of staple Korean seafood like mackerel (sardines), squid, and yellow croaker have significantly increased due to climate change affecting marine life. Prices for mackerel have risen by 36% compared to last year. The increase is attributed to rising sea temperatures, causing poor growth and less availability of marketable fish. Even fresh fish like flounder and rockfish have become more expensive due to last year's heatwave, affecting supply. The South Korean government has introduced emergency measures, including import tariffs on mackerel, to stabilize prices and support domestic aquaculture against heat stress.
