Korean large-scale supermarket chains are engaging in intense discount competition by offering incredibly low-priced chicken. Lotte Mart started with a major sale featuring 'Tongkeun Chicken' priced at 5,000 KRW per chicken, reminiscent of prices 15 years ago. For their second week, they slashed prices even further, promising prepared freshwater eel and large sushi sets at massive discounts. Emart is holding its 'Gorait Festa', offering their Perfect Chicken at 3,480 KRW, marking a notable decrease from its usual 6,000 KRW range. Meanwhile, Homeplus is participating with its 'Crazy 4 Days Special', with 'Old-style Fried Chicken' priced at 3,990 KRW. This was made possible due to bulk purchasing strategies and lower operational costs compared to chicken franchises. The move signals the start of aggressive discounting among retailers as the summer season begins.
