Tokushima, located on Shikoku island in Japan, is famed for its indigo dye known as "Japan Blue." This traditional dye, derived from the "ai" plant, once dominated Japanese fashion and was integral to the local economy. Tokushima's historical towns, like Wakimachi, preserve the architecture and culture of the Edo period, with traditional houses protected as important cultural properties. Every August, Tokushima hosts the Awa Odori festival, one of Japan's most famous traditional dances, attracting over a million visitors. Outside the festival, visitors can explore historic sites and partake in indigo dyeing workshops. The region also marks the start of the Shikoku Pilgrimage, a revered journey through 88 Buddhist temples.
