In 1885, Mrs. Scranton was sent to Korea as the first female missionary by the U.S. Methodist Women's Missionary Society, separate from the male missionary, Appenzeller, sent by the main Methodist Church. The Women's Missionary Society was established after the U.S. Civil War, aiming to spread the Gospel to women by women. Despite initial skepticism, these women founded schools, hospitals, and welfare facilities in Korea, significantly contributing to modern education and healthcare. By 1940, they had sent 400 female missionaries to Korea. Their legacy continues through the Scranton Women's Leadership Center, which provides scholarships to female students from developing countries.
