Chung Myung-whun has been appointed as the first Asian music director at La Scala, Milan's most prestigious opera house, marking a significant milestone in its 247-year history. Fortuna Ortombina, the director of La Scala, praised Chung's ability to interpret classical works by Beethoven and Verdi in a modern style, making them sound contemporary despite being composed over 150 years ago. Ortombina emphasized Chung’s exceptional relationship with orchestras and choirs and recommended him to the board, which approved his appointment unanimously. Chung, known for conducting numerous performances at La Scala, will take on this role officially in 2027. Collaborations between La Scala and the soon-to-open Busan Opera House are also being discussed. Ortombina believes La Scala’s financial sustainability relies on a blend of government funding, ticket sales, and securing sponsorships. He envisions a future where La Scala is accessible to every citizen of Milan, with Chung’s skill and subtlety as essential to achieving this vision.
