During the first three days of the Lunar New Year holiday, a record 860,000 travelers left South Korea for international destinations. Data from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport revealed Japan as the top destination, followed by China and Vietnam. The declining satisfaction with domestic travel, partly due to rising costs and service dissatisfaction during the pandemic, seems to be a reason for this trend. Jeju Island, a popular local tourist spot, faced a decrease in domestic visitors but saw an increase in foreign tourists. The travel industry expects this overseas travel trend to continue due to favorable currency exchange rates and visa-free entry to China. They also anticipate increased demand for long-haul trips during the upcoming Chuseok holiday (Korean harvest festival).
