A study by Tufts University researchers, published in The Journal of Nutrition, shows that drinking 1-2 cups of caffeinated black coffee daily can reduce the risk of death from all causes by 16-17%. However, adding too much sugar and saturated fat (like cream) to coffee nullifies its health benefits. The study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2018, considering factors like caffeine or decaf and sugar/saturated fat content. The health benefits of coffee are attributed to bioactive compounds like caffeine, chlorogenic acid, and polyphenols, known for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. Significant reduction in death risk was only observed with black coffee or coffee with minimal sugar and fat. The study aligns with dietary guidelines recommending limited intake of sugar and saturated fats.
