Kenneth Noland, a prominent 20th-century colorist known for his abstract works, is currently being celebrated in exhibitions in Seoul and Tokyo. Noland, who was heavily influenced by color theory learned from Josef Albers, became famous for his 'Circle' series featuring concentric circles. These works highlighted the tension and contrast produced by vibrant, unprimed colors on canvas. Meanwhile, Sam Gilliam, an artist renowned for his 'drape' paintings, which freed canvases from wooden frames, is also being exhibited. Gilliam's works are re-examined for their improvisational qualities reminiscent of jazz — previously under-recognized due to his identity as a Black artist in a predominately white art world. Both exhibitions are available to view for free until March 29 in Seoul.
