South Korea is embarking on the development of an independent space telescope, with aims to utilize over 70% indigenous technology. This initiative hopes to establish a launch foundation within five years and facilitate industry growth linked to space sciences. The Director of the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, Park Jang-hyun, stresses the need for Korea to design and manufacture space telescopes domestically, boosting technological self-reliance. The project intends to shift from past international collaborations where Korea played limited roles, instead focusing on domestic-led design and execution. This reflects broader strategic necessities in space development, given regional geopolitical challenges. The telescope is likely to be optical, with a budget of approximately 70-80 billion Korean Won ($59-$68 million USD).
