Why Did a Russian Composer Write an Opera in French While in America?

The Korea National Opera is staging the Korean premiere of Sergey Prokofiev's opera 'The Love for Three Oranges' at the Opera House of the Seoul Arts Center from October 26-29. Prokofiev, a prominent Russian composer, first wrote the opera in Russian but later translated it into French due to the unfamiliarity of American audiences with Russian operas and his own lack of proficiency in English. Completed in 1919, the opera, based on an Italian play, tells the story of a prince cursed to fall in love with three oranges. The production is directed by Lorenzo Fioroni and features a stage design inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo, an Italian painter known for creating portraits using fruits and vegetables.
