In an interview with the Korea Economic Daily on November 5, up-and-coming 19-year-old composer Lee Han-euri discusses her approach to integrating traditional Korean music (Gugak) with Western music. Lee recently won the Bartók International Competition in Budapest, becoming a notable figure in the classical music scene. She will showcase her latest work with the Seoul Korean Traditional Music Orchestra, focusing on the similarities between Korean rhythmic patterns and Western musical loops. Interestingly, Lee highlights the innovative use of the Gayageum, a traditional Korean string instrument with metal strings akin to the Western cimbalom, creating a unique auditory blend in her compositions.
