The first-ever Birkin Bag, which inspired the iconic Hermes brand, and used by the late Jane Birkin, will be auctioned next month. Jane Birkin was a British singer and actress who collaborated with Hermes' CEO Jean-Louis Dumas to create the bag in 1985. The bag's design originated from a sketch Birkin made on an air sickness bag during a flight, expressing her need for a larger handbag. The bag was commercialized and became a huge success. The first Birkin Bag was previously sold for AIDS charity funds and has been held by a collector known as 'Catherine B'.
