Cruise ship tourism in South Korea is experiencing rapid growth, with a substantial increase in foreign visitors. This surge is attributed to mounting global interest in K-content and greater inclusion of South Korean cities as destinations in cruise itineraries. However, to sustain this growth, there is a call for improvements in domestic port infrastructure and expansion of tourism content. Although South Korea ports mainly serve as stopover destinations (gihaeng – temporary docking points), efforts are being made to promote them as home ports (mohang – starting or ending point), which could enhance economic benefits. The industry sees potential in tapping into older travelers who favor relaxing voyages and younger generations seeking new experiences. With the support of government initiatives, collaboration among local governments, and partnerships with cruise lines, South Korea aims to boost both infrastructure and tourism offerings.
