Korean Traditional Music Day Celebrated on June 5th

Starting this year, the South Korean government has designated June 5th as 'Korean Traditional Music Day' to promote and celebrate traditional Korean music, known as 'gukak.' This date commemorates the first recorded composition of the piece 'Yeomillak' by King Sejong, which appeared in historical records on June 5th, 1447.
Various events, including performances and ceremonies, are held across the country throughout June in celebration of Gukak. Notably, a special reenactment of a royal feast from King Sejong's era, involving over 300 performers, will take place at Gyeongbokgung Palace. Additionally, the National Gugak Center will host performances by renowned traditional artists.
The events aim to showcase the cultural and industrial potential of gukak and offer a diverse range of performances and activities, such as traditional music concerts and festivals featuring regional master artists and new creative pieces.
