Ahn Seung-il, a renowned mountaineer photographer, known for his relentless dedication to capturing Mount Baekdu for 20 years, passed away at age 79 from old age on May 8th. Ahn was born in Seoul in 1946, and was famous for his commitment to photographing places consistently over long periods. Starting in 1984, he spent 10 years photographing a traditional Korean house in Gangwon Province (a region in South Korea), and in 1994, he became captivated by Mount Baekdu — a significant volcanic mountain located on the border between North Korea and China. Ahn settled in a nearby village, spending up to 10 months a year climbing the mountain and taking photographs. He earned the nickname 'Bear of Baekdu Mountain' for his dedication.
