Breeding Seabirds in Jeopardy: June's Marine Life Spotlight

Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has designated the streaked shearwater (known as 'sooty shearwater' locally) as June's marine life. These seabirds, spending most of their life at sea, face severe breeding challenges in Korea's largest breeding site, Sasudo in Jeju, due to invasive predators like rats. As a result, over 90% of their breeding attempts fail. The streaked shearwater is classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN, and has been protected by Korea since 2016. Additionally, the ministry has chosen pomfret fish and kelp as the seafood of the month, praised for their unique flavors and significance in local cuisine. Also featured are the picturesque fishing villages of Bongam Jade Pebble Village and Sinsido Village for June's travel destinations.
