Art Forgery Scandal in Korea: 2834 Works Found Fake

In Korea, a massive art forgery scandal involving the works of renowned painters Lee Jung-seop and Park Soo-geun caught public attention. Starting in 2005, the legal battle over the authenticity of these artworks lasted 12 years, concluding in 2017 with a Supreme Court ruling. Nearly 2,800 pieces attributed to these artists were deemed forgeries by experts. This event highlighted the complexities of art authentication—comprising provenance research, expert opinion, and scientific analysis. In response to such issues, Korea enacted the 'Art Promotion Act' in 2024 to formalize and regulate art appraisal processes, though its effectiveness remains to be seen.
