Constraints of Regulation on Korean Casinos: Urgency of Sustainable Practices

Korean casinos are legally considered part of tourism promotion but face negative perceptions associating them with illegal gambling. The Korea Gambling Control Commission, established under the Prime Minister in 2007, oversees the responsible operation of casinos and other legal gambling industries. Despite this oversight, casinos struggle with public distrust and regulatory difficulties, particularly the ones that cater exclusively to foreigners, except for Kangwon Land. The commission promotes social responsibility and transparent operations, suggests developing a data-based management system, and encourages categorizing urban resorts like casinos under broader city platform strategies rather than isolated ventures. As such, promoting and structuring legal casinos with a focus on transparent and responsible practices is necessary to overcome stigma and contribute significantly to tourism.
