The Chuncheon World Puppet Festival, which opened on the 23rd under the theme 'Puppets that Transcend Borders', is now midway through its schedule. Kids who grew up watching puppet shows are now adults, coming to performances hand-in-hand with their own children. This year's festival, running until June 1st, features over 100 puppet shows from 21 countries, including compelling performances by 4 French puppet troupes. Key performances include: 1. "Don't Wait for Me" by the French troupe Snow on the Eyelashes Company. This show blends puppetry and animation to follow various characters searching for their suddenly vanished 'home', told through an imaginative narrative. 2. "Old Dog" by the Korean troupe 'Namu'. The shadow play depicts the journey of an aging dog and cat searching for their grandmother's traces, filled with obstacles like snakes and dog-catchers. Its simple but poignant narrative evokes tears. 3. "Midnight Kazoo" by the French troupe Cie Singe Diesel. This puppet show features over 20 puppets with sad pasts, including a puppet mourning a lost wife and a couple unaware of the impending 9/11 attacks. Ultimately, each performance leaves the audience with stories of love, exploring emotions of joy, loss, and hope. Interested foreign audiences would find a deeper connection as it highlights universal themes like love and loss, transcending language barriers through creative expression.
