As the number of foreign tourists visiting Korea increases, the demand for Korean snacks has soared, particularly among Chinese tourists who consider certain snacks like 'Chambungeoppang' (a popular fish-shaped pastry) a symbol of wealth. In the first quarter, sales in tourist hotspots like Seoul Station and Myeongdong increased by 59% due to the popularity of these snacks on social media.
The Lotte Mart Zetaplex at Seoul Station saw a 91% increase in sales of branded snacks. 'Chambungeoppang' is especially popular due to its association with wealth in Chinese culture. The snack has gained popularity in other markets like the U.S. as well, through outlets like Costco.
Korean companies, like Orion, are leveraging these trends to boost exports and brand recognition globally, with limited-edition products aimed at foreign tourists. The viral effect of these snacks on social media is opening new opportunities for K-snacks globally.
