Using mouthwash right after brushing your teeth could be harmful, according to dental expert Dr. Dipa Chopra. She suggests that rinsing with mouthwash can wash away fluoride from toothpaste, which is crucial for preventing cavities and strengthening enamel. Mouthwash usually contains less fluoride than toothpaste, diminishing the toothpaste's protective effects. Instead, use mouthwash at other times of the day, such as after meals or snacks, and consider using alcohol-free mouthwash to avoid dryness and overgrowth of bacteria. Excessive use of mouthwash can lead to oral infections by removing beneficial bacteria, so limit usage to under 30 seconds.
