In South Korea, coffee professionals, known as baristas, partake in numerous competitions worldwide. However, the lack of standard regulations or recognition by international bodies makes it challenging to gauge a barista's competence solely from their awarded titles. The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), the leading authority in the coffee world, hosts annual World Coffee Championships across seven categories. The most prestigious is the World Barista Championship (WBC), where participants must prepare a series of 12 coffee drinks under intense scrutiny. Other categories include tasting, brewing, and coffee roasting. South Korean baristas have made notable achievements in these competitions, such as Jun Jeon from Momo's Coffee winning the WBC in 2019, and Heongkwan Moon from Muns Coffee Bar winning the World Cup Tasters Championship in 2022. Despite Korea's rising recognition, some competitions like the World Brewers Cup remain unclaimed by Korean finalists.
