Chung Myung-whun has been appointed as the first Asian music director of Italy's prestigious La Scala opera house (Teatro alla Scala), marking a historic moment in the 247-year history of the venue. Known as a world-class opera stage that debuted masterpieces like Verdi's 'Nabucco' and Puccini's 'Madama Butterfly', La Scala has only once before had a non-Italian director. The appointment of Chung, who also directs Classic Busan, reflects longstanding ties with La Scala. He has conducted an impressive number of performances there since 1989, including 84 operas and 141 concerts. His term will be from 2027 to 2030, during which time he aims to foster collaboration between La Scala and Busan's upcoming Opera House, scheduled to open in 2027.
