Paul Gauguin's last self-portrait, 'Self-Portrait with Glasses' (1903), held at Switzerland's Basel Art Museum, is under scrutiny for being a possible forgery. Amateur art appraiser Fabrice Fourmanoir claims the piece was painted by Vietnamese anti-colonial activist Nguyễn Văn Cẩm in the early 1910s and not by Gauguin. Fourmanoir supports his claim with testimony from Cẩm’s son and points to discrepancies like the eye color and absence of Gauguin's distinctive features in the work. The Basel Museum has begun a scientific analysis to assess the painting’s authenticity, with results expected by July. This inquiry follows previous doubts and market transactions involving the controversial piece.
