In a recent viral video, foreigners experienced an automated fast-food restaurant in Seoul, which reminded them of a futuristic 2050. However, the concept of automated restaurants dates back to 1895 in Berlin, Germany, with the creation of the 'Automat.' This was essentially a large vending machine offering food with minimal human interaction. The Automat gained popularity in Europe and later in the USA, with companies like Horn & Hardart pioneering this concept in Philadelphia. While the Automat concept faded with the rise of fast-food chains, recent attempts have been made to revive it, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Korea, similar automation trends are appearing as seen in the innovative fast-food experiences in places like Hongdae, Seoul.
