Nipah Virus: A New Threat for Southeast Asia Travelers

South Korean health authorities have designated the Nipah virus as a first-class infectious disease, marking the first update in five years since COVID-19. The virus, which primarily spreads in Southeast Asia and India, is transmitted through contaminated date palm sap and can be deadly, with a fatality rate of 40-75%. There are currently no vaccines or treatments available, and travelers are advised to avoid consuming date palm sap in affected regions.
