Building Hope with Fragile Materials: The Paper Cathedrals
Creatrip Team
Architect Shigeru Ban built two unique cathedrals using paper tubes. The first, in Kobe, Japan, and the second, in Christchurch, New Zealand, were created after devastating earthquakes in each location. These 'Paper Cathedrals' demonstrate innovative use of fragile materials for temporary structures. Despite the unconventional choice of material, these buildings provide a sense of sanctuary to communities recovering from disaster. Ban's work highlights both the artistic potential of paper and the importance of providing rapid, cost-effective solutions in the wake of tragedy.
