German artist Ulla von Brandenburg is holding her first solo exhibition in Korea, titled "Shadows Under Water," at Barakat Contemporary in Seoul until July 13. The exhibition features a unique space surrounded by blue curtains, creating a maze-like atmosphere that blurs the boundaries between exterior and interior. Central to the exhibition is a 5-channel video projection featuring objects like fans and ribbons slowly sinking underwater, exploring themes of reality, dreams, and the unconscious. Complementing the video are new cyanotype works, chlorine paintings, and the installation of blue curtains. Von Brandenburg, influenced by classical literature and pre-Freudian psychoanalysis, uses multiple mediums to build 'psychological stages' that repeat and symbolize her themes. Her work invites visitors into a contemplative state, engaging with both object and emotion. This exhibition provides an immersive experience of the interplay between presence and absence, dreams and memory.
