Pohang Songdo Beach in South Korea, once known as 'Myeongsasilli' (a term signifying the beauty of its sands stretching for miles), is reopening after being closed for 18 years due to sand erosion. Notable for its popularity and proximity to attractions like Jukdo Market and Pohang Canal, the beach had been a tourist hotspot averaging 120,000 yearly visitors. However, large-scale reclamation projects in the 1970s led to sand erosion and water quality decline, culminating in its closure in 2007. A restoration project costing approximately $23 million USD involved installing three underwater breakwaters and replenishing 150,000㎥ of sand, successfully restoring its 1.3 km length and 50 m width beach. Pohang City is preparing for the reopening with expanded facilities and improved environmental conditions, aiming to recapture its former glory as one of Korea's top beaches.
