Rising Food Prices in South Korea: Jajangmyeon and Naengmyeon Reach New Highs

The cost of popular South Korean dishes like Jajangmyeon (a noodle dish with black bean sauce) and Naengmyeon (cold noodle dish) has significantly increased over the past decade. According to the Korea Consumer Agency, Jajangmyeon prices in Seoul rose by 65% from 4,500 KRW in 2014 to 7,423 KRW in 2023. Naengmyeon prices also spiked by 50%, reaching up to 20,000 KRW in some eateries. The increase in prices is attributed to rising costs of ingredients like onions, cucumbers, and pork, along with processed items such as salt and cooking oil. If this trend continues, the average price of Jajangmyeon in Seoul might exceed 8,000 KRW next year.
