Zoning Out at Hangang: A South Korean Competition Breaks Mundane Stereotypes

A unique event called the 'Hangang Zoning Out Competition' was held in Seoul at the Banpo Hangang Park where 126 participants, dressed in costumes ranging from traditional Korean hanbok to clown outfits, spent 90 minutes doing nothing. This competition, aimed at challenging the belief that doing nothing is unproductive, combined heart rate measurements and public voting to determine the winner. Participants from all walks of life, including foreigners, competed by maintaining a 'zoned-out' state, appreciating the importance of rest in busy lives. Despite the relaxing atmosphere, competition was fierce with a 57:1 application ratio. The event has been held annually since 2016, with exceptions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
